Mobile Wander Management

Our wander management service includes a mobile device for your staff. This device allows the staff to have the app available and look up the resident’s location at any time, in any location.

Our Notification Service Offers Escalation Points and Timelines

The Geoangel notification system can alert the staff based on a hierarchy system that you can customize. For example, if a resident enters an unsafe zone, the nearest caregiver will be notified with an alert on their device. If after “5” minutes the situation is not resolved, the alert escalates to the next available caregiver and so on. The hierarchy is decided by your organization, as well as the timing to resolve the matter.

DOES YOUR SYSTEM WORK WITH INDIVIDUALS?

Because of the medical nature of the services we provide, our system installations must have a sponsoring medical organization that is monitoring and responding to system alerts and alarms.

In the case of Home Care installations, this requires that the nurse-call functionality of our system be staffed and monitored by Nurses from the Home Care company or agency.

IS THERE A COST FOR INSTALLATION?

Geoangel has a number of different payment alternatives for our clients, including ones that do not have any costs associated with the initial installation.

HOW LONG DOES THE GEOWATCH™ LAST BETWEEN CHARGES?

.There are a number of factors that impact the battery life of the GeoWatches™, they include:

  • The amount of time the resident is within our sensor network (using less battery) vs the amount of time they are using GPS and the public Cellular Network (more battery).
  • How much the resident is moving around the facility (changing which locator they are connected to).
  • The density and stability of the WIFI network in the building (something that we assess, and make recommendations about before installation Geoangel).
  • The stability of the internet connection to your building

Given those factors (which alter the battery life of individual watches), we typically expect watches to last 35-48 hours between charges.

This means that we recommend that watches be changed daily, on a regular schedule.  It takes approximately 30 seconds to change a watch.

DOES YOUR SYSTEM INCLUDE WIRED DOOR ALARMS?

Our system does not include (or need) wired door alarms.  The Geoangel system does not work like old wander-guard-type systems, by trying to only monitor when residents pass certain checkpoints (like doors).

Instead, our system monitors the precise location of every resident, and alerts when someone moves to a space that is not designated as safe.  It is irrelevant how a resident gets from a safe space to an unsafe space (through a door, the window, or a mail slot) the system will be able to tell that they are no longer in a safe space, and will alert staff.

IF A RESIDENT APPROACHES AN UNSAFE ZONE, DOES A LOUD ALARM GO OFF DISTURBING OTHER PATIENTS ?

Our system is designed specifically to be as non-disruptive to residents as possible.  Through the use of our staff mobile devices, alerts can be discretely transmitted to staff members (via vibration-mode, for instance) without disrupting other residents.

It is also important to note, that because of this series of features, it is not possible for staff to dismiss an alert.  The way to make an alert stop, is to fix the situation that is causing the alert to go off.  This allows for automatic escalation within the facility of alerts that are not being handled in a timely manner.

IS YOUR SYSTEM JUST A WAY FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO WATCH ME/US?

Our system isn’t designed for anyone to watch anyone.  As a matter of fact, it is quite the opposite we take great pains to make sure that individuals are not identified as part of the default displays on any of our monitors.  We don’t want anyone able to watch you.

What we do want is in case of an emergency, a fall, a wandering incident, and out of norm medical condition, a nurse call for clinical staff to be able to find a resident quickly and easily.

In short, the only time someone can locate you is if there is an emergency that means they need to locate you.

HOW IS THE DATA COLLECTED BY GEOANGEL PROTECTED?

Even though the question of whether some of the data collected by Geoangel is actually covered by HIPAA regulations (location information, as an example), Geoangel has chosen to treat all of our collected information as HIPAA protected information.  This means that we have done, and are doing, the following:

  • Data that can identify a particular resident is absent from the default screens of all display devices
  • Access to any Protected Health Information (PHI) is made available to authorized staff, by individual login, only
  • All PHI accessed is logged in the system as to who accessed, and when, per HIPAA regulations
  • Data collected by the system is encrypted in flight, and at rest, using an AES 512 encryption algorithm that far exceeds the requirements of the HIPAA regulation (and in fact exceeds the NSA’s requirements for national security data encryption)
DOESN'T THIS SYSTEM JUST CAUSE MORE WORK FOR STAFF?

Geoangel is designed to decrease the amount of repetitive, and boring work for staff and thereby allow staff more time to do the things that they have universally told us they like to do interacting with their residents!

Geoangel reduces staff workload in the following ways:

  • Our system doesn’t false alarm, so you can stop silencing the door alarm every time someone runs the microwave.
  • Our system doesn’t fail to alarm when it should, so you can stop taking herculean measures to insure your resident’s safety when your current system fails to perform as it should.
  • Because our system works equally well inside and outside of the building, normal staff/resident ratios can be maintained, even on outings, and even for residents with wander risks.
  • Accurate Location capabilities within the building mean that it doesn’t take you 15 minutes to find Mrs Smith in the courtyard, when it’s time for her afternoon meds  you can look where she is, and go directly there in 2 minutes.
  • After an incident occurs, it often takes many hours to unravel the details of what actually occurred, determine any needed corrective actions, and implement those actions. With the Geoangel system, the locations of various individuals involved in an incident can be replayed for resolution purposes after the fact.
  • Geoangel can be integrated with the time and attendance functions of your facility, so that securely logging into the Geoangel system also functions as a time-clock punch.
  • Geoangel can be integrated with the security & access control functions of your facility, so that a staff mobile device can automatically lock and unlock doors as staff members near them.
WHAT DOES THE GEOWATCH™ LOOK LIKE?

How it works 10 Wander Management System

The Geoangel watch was designed specifically to look non-institutional.  To look like a familiar object.  So in-short, it looks like a smartwatch.

This was done for a few specific reasons:

  • Research shows that people with dementia are much less bothered by (and therefore try to remove less (and try to fiddle with less) objects that are familiar to them.
  • There can be a stigma associated with wearing a wanderguard-style wristband. The GeoWatch™ looks like, and behaves like, and is largely indistinguishable from, any other smartwatch ie, no stigma.

We have also found that, the material, color, and texture of the watchband is important to some residents.  So we offer a wide-array of easily changed watchbands to choose from.

WHAT CAN RESIDENTS DO WITH THE GEOWATCH?

The GeoWatch™ looks like a nice smart watch because it is, a nice smart watch.   There are a number of different watch face “screens” that residents can choose from, when using the watch as a watch.  We also have the capability of having the watch speak the time aloud, for the visually impaired.

Residents can also use the GeoWatch™ to generate a nurse call, and then converse with the caregiver. This functionality works (as is the case with all GeoWatch™ functionality) both inside and outside the building.  It has proven to be a critical feature for Independent Living and Personal Services communities, that residents be able to signal for help when they are away from the facility (at a restaurant, or library perhaps).

WHAT IF A RESIDENT DOESN'T WANT TO WEAR THE GEOWATCH™?

If a resident takes this position, it is often a result of staff presenting the watch to them in the wrong way, or not at all. (if the staff member says “put this on, it’s so we can track you”) of course the resident is going to be resistant!

We have found that the best approach is to be simple, and truthful. . . “The watch will help to keep you healthy and safe”.

In addition, we have found that by simply giving the residents a choice about the appearance of their GeoWatches™ goes a long way in building a positive relationship with the GeoWatch™.

DON'T RESIDENTS JUST TAKE THE WATCH OFF?

Because our system is taking biometric readings (like heart rate) as well as the other information it is gathering, if a resident removes the watch, it will alert that no heartrate is found for that resident.  That either means they’ve removed the watch, or that something much more dramatic has happened, and either way, clinical staff need to check on it ASAP.

We have found that for residents who take the watch off, particularly ones who are non-communicative, changing to a different color band that they find more pleasing often does the trick.

For the very small percentage of residents who persist in removing the watch, we do offer lockable wristbands (that are stylish and good looking) that are made of metal, and cannot be cut, or removed without a special tool.

DOES THIS SYSTEM MONITOR WHERE STAFF IS, AS WELL AS WHERE RESIDENTS ARE?

The location of staff mobile devices is monitored in the same way that resident watches are. This is for three purposes:

  • Staff location can be used as a criteria for where a resident nurse call gets routed. One possible choice is for nurse calls to be routed to the caregiver who is physically closest.
  • Staff location is important in some circumstances for incident resolution, to document the positions of staff when a particular incident occurred.
  • Staff location is also important to protect staff in the case of abuse or neglect accusations by residents or family members. As an example. . . should a resident turn up with a black eye, and say that it happened because the 3rd shift CNA punched them it’s a tremendous problem, and difficult to deal with; unless we wind back the location records and show that the 3rd shift CNA was never close enough to assault the resident.
ARE THE GEOWATCHES™ WATERPROOF?

GeoWatches™ are waterproof (as long as you don’t have any scuba-divers.  They’re only waterproof to 20 meters depth). They are also impact resistant, and as rugged as we are capable of making them.
